The use of magnets
as a therapy is not new and records show their use by ancient Hindu
teachings in the "The Vedas" in 2000 BC. The ancient Egyptians
and Greeks mention magnets as a form of healing long ago as 3 BC
and are mentioned in records written by Aristotle and Pliny.
More recently from
the 1930's onwards scientific research carried out by Scientist's
and Doctors namely Davis and Rawls, Dr William H Phillpot MD, Roger
Coghill MA (Cantab,) C.Biol. MI Biol. MA (Environ.Mgmt.).
Roger Coghill is regarded
as being at the forefront of magnetic therapy research as well as
being an expert in the field on the effects of electro-magnetic
fields on human cells especially in regard to mobile phone and computer
radiation etc.
There is no doubt
that magnetic fields have an affect on human cells either to benefit
or as in the case of radio waves from electro-magnetic fields can
do harm.
The problem is why some work better than others and some not at
all! The reasons can fall into 4 categories:
- Strength of magnet
600 - 2000 gauss being preferred
- Size of magnet,
this is the most important factor as this determines how far the
magnetic field lines will project away from the surface of the
magnet
- Product. Direct
onto the area of pain or indirect over the flow of blood i.e.
pulse point
- Comfort. Many
products are bought and later discarded due to them either too
uncomfortable to wear, to inconvenient to use or too bulky
Strength of magnet
has already been discussed as has material used, Neodymium which
is a "rare earth" alloy which is made of samarium cobalt
and boron. Manufacturing these magnets is very advanced and is made
in a protected environment and ground to exacting tolerances. This
material is pressed at the same time a powerful magnetic field is
applied then sintered with a special mixture of gases to high degree
of hardness. These are then finished with diamond tipped tools and
cooled. Neodymium is far and away the most powerful magnetic material
and take up to one fifth of the space for the same magnetic force
when compared to ceramic magnets, which means size for size five
times more magnetic power.
The size of magnet,
regardless of strength, will determine how far the magnetic field
will direct away from the surface of the magnet. For example an
1800 gauss magnet 1mm thick and 5mm dia will "project"
a magnetic field 3 to 4mm away from the surface and losing power
all the time so its effective field will only be 1mm from the surface
as the gauss reading drops away. The magnet in my wristband will
have a detectable field 100mm away from the surface but at 20mm
will put an effective field deep enough into the body to stimulate
blood, muscle and tissue in that area and 5mm around the edge.
Some companies imply
that because a jewellery item has several magnets within its design
it will have more power which is not true. They do not collectively
add together to create a larger field, they just cover more area
and are more often than not big or strong enough to have any real
effect. (See paragraph above on size). In fact some of the magnets
in these items that I have tested would not pick up a paper clip.
When placing a magnet
on the site of pain the magnetic field will create what I call "molecular
massage" on the atoms and molecules that make up muscle and
tissue and where damage is present can neutralize the Ph into a
more alkaline state which the body can then start the repair process.
When a magnet is place
over a main blood supply the blood which passes through, (at about
40mph) will react, this due to the presence of iron, (hemoglobin)
which is the oxygen carrier to every cell in the body. By agitating
the red blood cells in the wrist the blood on its return to lungs
(3 seconds) has been shown to alter the spin state of iron atom
and so helps the blood cell absorb oxygen more efficiently, this
is then delivered to the brain and then around the whole body feeding
a more efficient supply of oxygen together with food and nutrients
into every single cell. From the heart and lungs the blood will
be pumped to the feet and back in approximately 40 seconds.
The improvement in
the exchange of oxygen, food and nutrients with carbon dioxide,
toxins and other waste will neutralize any chemical imbalance all
over the body and create the right condition for the body to heal
itself, naturally.
It is important to
note that it is an improvement of blood flow NOT an increase, which
is often mistakenly stated, so there is no increase in heart rate,
however in areas where there may be concern over a heart condition
or any other serious ailment professional medical advice is always
recommended.
Comfort is important
especially when worn for long periods, during exercise or whilst
in bed so it important that the wearer can confidently wear it and
forget it. Most wraps and supports are made of neoprene which does
not allow the skin beneath to breath so can get hot and sticky which
it will be removed more often and so reduce the products effectiveness.
The Pulse wristband can be worn 24 hrs a day without discomfort
and can be worn in the bath or shower which aids cleaning which
also means it is less likely to be mislaid or forgotten.
It's less than bulky
shape and design also means that it can be tucked into clothing
or rested on a painful area for short periods when needed and with
the addition of the extension can be worn around the ankle knee
or thigh if necessary.
As with conventional
treatments other factors come into play with regard to the general
health of the person seeking help. Some of these are general health,
other illnesses, cause, diet, smoking habits, sleep patterns, stress,
hormonal and water consumption. If these conditions are not corrected
then the body will take longer to recover and as the cause is difficult
to identify it is the symptom that is often treated. So practical
advice is always given which in the case of drinking more or enough
water on a daily basis is always suggested. This will help the body
detoxify and prevent dehydration especially in the first 3 to 4
days.
In the case of a person
wearing a pacemaker then it is advisable that a magnetic therapy
product is not worn or for that matter with any condition where
drugs are used to control heart rate, the same with pregnancy. Metal
implants are not a problem as Titanium is now more commonly used
or stainless steel and both are non-magnetic. If in doubt I always
suggest seeking further advice.
